Rebuilt from an old screwdriver

The cordless screwdriver is mainly made of ABS injection-molded plastic and offers a good grip thanks to a 2K injection-molded rubber coating. However, the outer shells in the storage area show a lot of wear. The connecting elements as well as screws, springs or clamps are made of metal. However, there are problem spots, such as excessively large ventilation slots in the area of the motor, which can allow foreign objects to enter. Overall, it does not have a stable upright standing position.

To understand the complexity of a cordless screwdriver, an old model was disassembled and rebuilt in Solidworks. In the process, important insights were gained for manufacturing and potential improvements were analyzed.

Application of Brand DNA

The goal was to develop a design that was very close to Gardena‘s existing elements. Organic shapes with striking material separations create a clear overall image. The color selection unifies the various components of the product so that it fits seamlessly into the brand‘s product portfolio

With the help of grip clay models, a comfortable grip shape was developed. The prototypes were tested and evaluated with hands of different sizes.

Prior to CAD design, a preliminary model was made from lightweight foam. The knowledge gained from this was taken into account in the CAD design. Using pre-models of the initial CAD data, the proportions were checked and adjusted.

Realistic final model

In model construction, all the different materials and colors had to be produced separately. Mainly, the model was produced using the resin 3D printing process. Only the two rubber halves were produced using the CNC milling process.

The special feature of this cordless screwdriver is the technical concept of combining the torque adjustment and the gear shift function.

To ensure a well-lit environment at every work station, the cordless screwdriver is equipped with a light below the drill chuck.

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the technical structure of a cordless screwdriver, a device was unscrewed. All parts were exactly reconstructed in CAD. The insights gained in this way, together with the findings from the market analysis, were recorded in the form of potential fields and finally in the form of concepts. After consolidation, the design was developed.
